Food

There is a lot of debate about which food is best for your dog. We recommend you ask your vet. At Lucky Dog Refuge, we use the following brands for our dogs, Nutro, Diamond, and Hills Science Diet. All can be found on Chewy.com.

DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG THESE FOODS

If your dog is exhibiting any of the following symptoms, it may mean that he ingested something foreign or toxic:

  • Vomiting (usually starts as food and proceeds to water) or gagging

  • Painful abdomen

  • Lack of appetite

  • Lethargy

  • Changes in typical behavior

  • Changes in bowels — diarrhea, constipation

  • Weakness, stiff or wobbly limbs, changes in gait

Go to the vet immediately

If your dog ingests a foreign object, you should take him or her to the vet. If your normal vet is unavailable, call a 24-hour emergency animal clinic and describe the situation.

Owners should not wait to see if the object will pass on its own. Do not try to induce vomiting without a veterinarian’s okay, as there are some foreign bodies that can cause just as much harm coming back out.

Why is Pet Insurance so Important?

Pet insurance can save you thousands of dollars if your pet gets sick or injured unexpectedly. The investment in pet insurance can help you say yes to life-saving medical treatments, and keep you out of the red when faced with overwhelming veterinarian bills. Pet insurance is for the unexpected accidents & illnesses that you just can't plan for – like when the dog eats something he shouldn't or is diagnosed with diabetes.

We've seen many pet parents wishing they'd purchased pet insurance plans before their cat or dog got sick or injured, as they didn't know how high the cost of treatment could get until it happened. Without pet insurance, unexpected vet bills can make a big dent in your savings account.

There are a number of health insurance companies but we personally like Healthy Paws and many of us at Lucky Dog insure our personal pets through them.
